As a property owner you likely keep a To Do list to include items requiring periodic maintenance, for example the batteries in your smoke detectors. Did you know your Smart TV and even some appliances like refrigerators and washing machines have firmware or software updates?
Your manufacturer may periodically publish updates that are intended to ensure these items are secure, include hot fixes, and even may offer enhanced capabilities or new features. For these reasons alone, it is a good idea to add to your list of annual maintenance tasks: Update My Electronics/Appliances Firmware and Software.
Methods of Updating:
Not every electronic or appliance is the same so this post includes the four most common methods for updating the software or firmware:
Automatic: It is important to note that some of your devices may be setup to automatically perform updates on their own. This kind of update takes place through the Internet, so your device would require that you have configured a working connection.
Online: Using this method, you use your Internet's connection to prompt your device to perform an update. Again, you'll want to ensure you are connected to the Internet or you will surely encounter an error.
Manually: You may be able to update some of your devices using a USB flash drive. Using this method, you download the update to your USB drive (usually your manufacturer's support site) and manually perform the update.
Device App: Some devices, such as LG Refrigerators, Wink among others, provide various capabilities for updating using their own Smart Phone App.
Remember that regular updates is as much about the smooth operation of all your electronics and appliances, which should translate into a better overall experience for your guests.
